The course aims to…

Develop
a broad and comprehensive knowledge of the interdisciplinary methodology, understanding of the processes and innovative approaches to sustainable governance within the UNEP/MAP Barcelona Convention system

Explore
the creative inter-linkages of environmental law and environmental governance with political science, ecology, technology, biological science, climate science, economics and social sciences

Use an interactive approach
to learning through a user-friendly educational platform promoted by the MEPIELAN Centre, promoting active learning methodologies and supporting interactive features to engage participants in the discussion of the topics at hand

Περιγραφή σεμιναρίου

This week-long online Training School designed and developed by UNEP/MAP – MEPIELAN Centre and organized in cooperation with the EPLO, provides unique integrated platform for knowledge exchange, discussion and capacity building in the field of sustainable environmental governance within the framework of the Barcelona Convention system and its evolving inter-linkages with relevant international treaty regimes and processes, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities in the Mediterranean region.

More specifically, it will delve into four interrelated subjects:

  1. The Barcelona Convention system for the protection of the marine environment and coastal areas of the Mediterranean, analyzing aspects of law, governance and policy as a process in an integrating and interdisciplinary perspective
  2. Specific Legal and Governance Issues for Environmental Protection and Sustainability in the Mediterranean Region and their relation to Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on Sea-Pollution and Ecosystem-based Law and Governance in the context of the Barcelona Convention system, Climate Change and Green Energy Transition in the Mediterranean
  3. Public Participation and Sustainability Governance in the Mediterranean Region by highlighting International Interlinkages for the promotion and implementation of Participatory Environmental Democracy, focusing on the inter-relationship between the Aarhus Convention and the Barcelona Convention system
  4. Sustainable Consumption and Production in the Mediterranean, addressing sustainable consumption and production issues to mitigate environmental degradation and resource depletion in the Mediterranean region, pressing challenges and adopting circular economy strategies to promote social, environmental and economic stability in all Mediterranean countries – Investment and Environment in the Mediterranean in relation to green financial investment and foreign direct investment in the Mediterranean.

The Training School will be held from 7 to 12 October 2024 (the working language will be English)

This Training School is
an educational implementation of:

  • the Barcelona Convention System for the Protection of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Mediterranean
  • the Mediterranean Strategy on Sustainable Development (MSSD)
  • the UNEP/MAP Medium-Term Strategy 2022 - 2027

Participants will be awarded a Certificate
signed by UNEP/MAP, MEPIELAN Centre and EPLO.

The Training School is the first step towards the establishment of an international postgraduate programme leading to a Master’s degree in sustainable maritime governance in the Mediterranean
